Miami Autism Dad Victor Antunez sits down with Lucas Castillo, a 13-year-old talking about the one role in a special needs family that almost never gets a microphone: the sibling. Lucas is the brother of Matthew, and he opens up about what it's really like to grow up beside a brother with special needs, the hard days, the parts his friends at school don't understand, and the feeling of growing up a little faster than everyone else his age. But this isn't a story about hardship. Lucas talks about how Matthew has pulled the whole family closer, and about something remarkable his parents admitted on the record: Lucas believed in Matthew, saw what he was capable of, before they did. He's fiercely protective of his brother, quick to stand up for him, and honest about what he wishes other kids understood about how to treat someone like Matthew. Lucas shares the lessons being a disability sibling has taught him that most 13-year-olds haven't learned yet, and a message for every other brother and sister out there carrying the same quiet responsibility.
