2 Mothers, 2 Kids With Down Syndrome, and the Faith That Carries Them | Miami Autism Dad

Miami Autism Dad Victor Antunez sits down with 2 mothers who found their footing in faith. Marta Noa, a special education teacher of nearly 30 years and founding board member of the Down Syndrome Association of Miami, is the mother of a daughter born with Down syndrome who now works at No Limits Café, a coffee shop employing adults with disabilities. Lisndra Bereijo, a 26-year educator, is the mother of a nonspeaking 19-year-old son with Down syndrome, autism, and Tourette's. When her husband kept asking why their son couldn't receive his sacraments, Lisndra, the experienced religion teacher, kept saying he couldn't, until she realized she was wrong. She prepared him herself, and within 2 months he was participating fully in the weekly service. Together these moms make the case that a house of faith can be one of the places a special needs family finally belongs, and they get honest about how hard it is to get there, and what they hope people see when their children walk into church.
